Community Pride - Allotment project

The Athersley allotment project was established to encourage the residents of the local community to have a go at growing their own fruit and vegetables, leading to a healthier lifestyle for the residents of Athersley, New Lodge and Smithies. The allotments are based on the former Athersley North Primary School site on Laxton Road and are available for rent by local residents.

The horticulture worker works with residents and groups taking allotments, to develop their plots, enhance their gardening skills through on-site training and support and develop the community composting aspects of the project.

Various classes are planned to be held at the Laxton Road site encouraging local residents to have a go at gardening. Classes are likely to consist of hanging basket making, garden tub design and planting, xmas wreaths, basic knowledge of garden design, pests and diseases and many more. Several classes have already been held over the past year in conjunction with the Neighbourhood Learning Net and thee proved highly succesful. So if you like the sound of any of these classes continue to check the project news section for any upcoming classes or events.

The project has also seen groups of pupils from local schools getting involved in gardening at the site, the work they have carried out is a credit to them.
